Bestinvest is Britain's top investment "platform" — or online shop for shares and funds — according to authoritative research conducted by a specialist consultancy, The Telegraph can disclose. Bestinvest scored 17 out of a possible 20 when it was rated for costs, service, the range of features and the breadth of investment choice, the survey by Platforum found. The research group has been evaluating platforms intended for financial advisers for a number of years but this is the first time that it has published ratings of the investment supermarkets aimed at individual investors.

Platforum set up accounts with 12 leading platforms — a process that "was not always as easy as it should have been" — and spent three months reviewing the websites, contacting customer service, looking at the available options and calculating the account fees for a number of different sized portfolios.

Four "road testers" scored each platform, then the final scores were aggregated. With the exception of the cost category, all scores were "subjective", the company said. The cost category was based on two specific portfolios with fixed sizes, trading activity and funds.

The appraisal process will continue, with results constantly available on a new website called Ideas For Investing.
